City Branding: Best Practices (p.III)
Toronto Tomorrow Identity
Pentagram designers faced the challenge of creating a clear, engaging presentation for the massive amount of information within the master plan. The result was a four-volume master plan with a unique identity for Sidewalk Labs’ project, aiming to transform Toronto’s eastern waterfront into one of the most innovative districts in the world.
The book design establishes the project’s visual identity by using color, typography, and bold illustrations to capture the vibrancy and dynamic image of the area envisioned by Sidewalk Labs.
Paris Tourism Brand
The Paris tourism brand was created in 1971 as a joint initiative of the Paris City Council and the Paris Chamber of Commerce and Industry. It serves three specific purposes: welcoming visitors, informing the public, and promoting Paris as a destination both in France and internationally.
As the city’s first point of contact with its visitors, the Paris Convention Bureau needed to update its branding, making it modern and recognizable. Designers focused on simplicity, creating a typographic composition that reflects the main symbol of Paris in the letter “A,” which directly resembles the Eiffel Tower.
An illustrator was invited to the project to create unique infographics for the brand. Simple, colorful designs perfectly aligned with the project’s vision. The chosen illustration style allowed the organization to move away from traditional postcard depictions of Paris and instead present a fresh, colorful, and poetic perspective of the capital.
